Retail careers, KRI initiatives, and more!

Career Highlight: Matthew Robinson, Assistant Store Manager

"The main advice I can give is not to overthink it. At the end of the day, it’s all about common sense. You want to have full shelves and a clean store that customers are happy to shop in. Give great customer service, and it will propel the business. To help grow your career, take every opportunity to study the business and company you are in. Every break I take, I always find something to read or learn. Be willing to change with the business. Retail is always changing. And take care of your associates. They are the best asset you have."

Matthew Robinson is an Assistant Store Manager at Lowe's and has been with them for the past 5.5 years. Prior to that, Matthew worked for Kroger and held titles such as Department Manager, Assistant Store Manager, and Field Specialist. He started his retail career as a part-time job when he turned 18, and he says the way he was raised gave him the determination to succeed in a retail career. Assistant Store Managers can make up to $71k annually on average and even more in some places!

Matthew didn't focus on a particular field of study or go to a certain college to achieve success; he says understanding the needs of the business and its customers allowed him to stick with the company and grow his career and skills with it.

When we asked Matthew what (if anything) he would've done differently knowing what he knows now, Matthew said he would've made his career more of a focus in his younger years.

"I was lucky enough to be promoted at young ages, but understanding the business and how to improve it would have been a strong focus earlier on."
